UAE: Dubai Green Tourism Award
The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) founded officially their first initiative for reduce of CO2 emissions of 20 % in the tourism industry of Dubai until 2011. The highlight will be the awarding of the Dubai Green Tourism Award in line with the World Environment Day in December 2009. The central aims of this initiative are to promote the awareness for the consequences of climate change, the CO2 emissions and the energy consumption of the tourism industry, the introduction of new methods to promote initiatives in the range of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the development of an information culture in this sector on the topic of effective tourism. The hotels of Dubai produce about 6,500 tons of CO2 emissions in the average in one year, and the carbon dioxide emissions of all hotels of the emirate amounts annual to 500 million kilo. This amount complies with 60,000 return flights between Dubai and London. These activities are part of the agenda of the DTCM to support the effective tourism in Dubai. It is expected that 200 hotels of the 3, 4 and 5 stars categories as well as apartment hotels of the high-end class to join the competition of the annual accolade.
